Vanuatu Earthquake
At least 14 people died and over 200 were wounded after a powerful magnitude-7.3 earthquake rattled Port Vila in Vanuatu on Tuesday. The number of causalities is likely to further increase as rescue operations take place after the devastating quake.
The earthquake indeed left destruction across the capital, including the collapse of buildings, landslides, and serious infrastructure damage. Of the casualties, four died at the main hospital, six due to a landslide, and another four were the result of a building collapse. With the continuance of search and rescue operations, local authorities and humanitarian organizations are preparing for possible additional casualties.
Katie Greenwood, Asia-Pacific head of the International Federation of Red Cross, told the Associated Press that based on what officials and volunteers are saying from the ground, the number of deaths is likely to rise.
Ongoing Rescue Efforts and Casualties
Over 200 injured persons are currently receiving treatment at Vila Central Hospital amidst the arrival of more medical support to help manage the increasing casualty toll.
The earthquake also caused critical damage to a number of key buildings, including the embassies of the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. Power and mobile services have been disrupted, making communication and coordination for relief efforts challenging.
