Rare Shooting at Oman Shia Mosque Tied to ISIS

So, in some really sad news, ISIS has said they're behind a shooting that went down at a Shia mosque in Oman. This is kind of a big deal because it's the first time something like this has happened in that area. The shooting took place on a Monday night at the Ali bin Abi Talib mosque in Muscat, the main city of Oman. It's pretty close to an international school, too.

What Went Down

The mosque was busy because it was right before Ashura, which is a big deal for Shia Muslims – it's like a memorial for Imam Hussein, who was the grandson of Muhammad. Some gunmen barged in and started shooting, which is just terrible. There's a video floating around showing people in the mosque running and screaming, it's all really chaotic and upsetting.

The People Involved

At least nine people didn't make it out of there alive, and 28 more got hurt. We know that some of the people who died were from Pakistan and India, and one of them was a police officer. ISIS is saying they did it, but they haven't shown any proof yet.

Why It's a Big Deal

Oman isn't usually a place you'd expect to see this kind of thing. They've got a pretty small Shia community, about 5% of the Muslim people there, and they haven't had much of the bad blood between Sunni and Shia that's going on in other countries nearby. So, this attack is really worrying for everyone.

What People Are Saying

Everyone's really upset about it, obviously. Local and big-time leaders are saying sorry to the families and promising to fight terrorism even harder. Oman's government is super serious about catching the bad guys and keeping everyone safe in the future.

The Bottom Line

This whole thing is a sad reminder that groups like ISIS can still cause trouble even in places that are usually safe. It's important for everyone to stick together and stay on their toes to stop these kinds of attacks from happening.
