So, get this: the guy who tried to take a shot at Donald Trump apparently had a drone doing some spy work beforehand. Crazy, right? Law enforcement spilled the beans about it and now we're all a bit more on edge about what happened at that rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13. This is according to our buddies at CBS, who got the scoop from the BBC, who are obviously keeping tabs on all things Trump.
The Drone and the Dude with the Gun
This 20-year-old, Thomas Matthew Crooks, he used a drone to check out the place where the rally was happening. They're still trying to figure out if he did it just hours before or if he was casing the joint for days. The Wall Street Journal was the first to tell the world, but then CBS backed it up. Some other news folks say he was flying that thing the day of the big event.
The Whole Shooting Deal
So, while Trump's talking away, a bullet goes right through his right ear. He says he got lucky or had some divine intervention. But, man, it's sad because someone in the crowd didn't get so lucky and another two got pretty banged up. Crooks was hiding on a rooftop about 130 meters (430 feet) from Trump and shot at him. The Secret Service guys took him down right there.
The Security Service in Hot Water
Now, everyone's looking at the people who are supposed to keep Trump safe and wondering if they dropped the ball. The head honcho, Kimberly Cheatle, has to go explain herself to some bigwigs in the House of Representatives on July 22.
What the Shooter Had on Him
When they checked out Crooks' ride, they found the drone, like, chilling in his car. And guess what else? Two bombs and a vest that makes you look like you're ready for war, along with four clips of the same bullets he used to try and do the deed. They're looking into whether the drone helped him pick the perfect spot to shoot from.
The Bottom Line
This whole thing is making everyone think hard about how we deal with drones when someone's got bad intentions. And, obviously, it's got us all talking about keeping our big shots safe at these fancy events. As they keep looking into it, we're all just sitting here wondering what else we've got to worry about in this techy world.
