Russia Presses Kursk Assaults, Pushes on Eastern Ukraine
The war between Russia and Ukraine is heating up with its approach to the third year. According to Ukraine's top army commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, Russian forces have intensified their attacks in two critical areas: the Kursk region and the eastern Donetsk region. Ukrainian troops are under heavy pressure as Russia increases its offensive efforts.
Heavy Assaults in the Kursk Region
For the third consecutive day, Russian forces have been conducting "heavy assaults" on Ukrainian positions in the Kursk region, Syrskyi said in a report on Tuesday. The Ukrainian military noted an increase in combat clashes: 68 battles in the last 24 hours, up from an average of 40 late last week.
The previous Ukraine attack came as a surprise in August, when the Kursk region had come under its incursion. However, over the past months, Ukrainian forces lost more than 40% of this initially seized territory. It had put quite an additional stretch on what is already extended-1,170 kilometer (727-mile)-frontline for Ukraine.
Russian Gains in Eastern Donetsk
Besides Kursk, Russian forces have turned up the heat in the eastern Donetsk region, with an advance at their fastest tempo this year. The cities of Pokrovsk and Kurakhove have become focal points of Russian attacks. Syrskyi described these areas as strategic targets for Moscow, where fighting continues to escalate.
North Korean Troop Involvement
Syrskyi also said that Russia is now "actively" deploying North Korean troops to boost its offensive. Though these troops are taking heavy casualties, their involvement reflects a deepening partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang. The added manpower has allowed Russia to maintain pressure on multiple fronts.
Challenges Facing Ukraine's Forces
As they defend the positions along the extended front line, Ukrainian forces become increasingly outnumbered and exhausted. According to analysts, it is a part of the Russian strategy to stretch Ukrainian defenses across multiple regions and, in effect, overwhelm troops and resources.
Political Implications: Trump Calls for Negotiations
An upsurge in fighting amid changed political dynamics on the world stage, with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump set to take office next month and calling for Ukraine to try negotiating a settlement with Russia to the war. On Monday, he called on Ukraine to be prepared to make a deal, showing some possibility of a shift in support from the U.S.
Road Ahead
With fighting in Kursk and Donetsk intensifying, challenges for Ukraine mount. A number of territorial losses and wearing out of its troops increase questions about the long-term prospects of the country's defense. While the world is on lookout, political changes in the US may alter the trajectory of this crisis.
