Mass Killings in China
The spate of mass killings in China caused alarm worldwide, leading to a series of questions regarding societal stressors and government responses. Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered local governments to ensure that similar incidents would not recur by identifying causes of these "extreme cases." Critics said this move would result in restrictions on freedoms.
A Rise in Violent Incidents
The shocking attacks in recent months, among others:
A man injured 30 at an elementary school in Hunan following significant investment losses. A student killed eight at a vocational school in Yixing, following exam failure. A man killed 35 people in Zhuhai, according to Xinhua; his reported motive was outrage over the outcome of his divorce.
While the motivations are different, analysts believe the root cause could be related to social pressures. Wu Qiang, a former political science professor, states, "every person has a feeling of injustice. This society is very unfair, and they can't bear it anymore."
Government Censorship and Issues of Transparency
The Chinese government has been accused of censoring information about the incidents. According to reports:
Videos and eyewitness accounts of the Zhuhai attack vanished from the web.
Information about the Hunan attack was only reported weeks later, reducing any chances of awareness among the public.
This situation itself is a reflection of lacking transparency, which further brings the ability to monitor or assess the intensity of such incidents under question.
Call for Preventive Measures Called by Xi Jinping
Following the tragedies, Xi Jinping urged local governments to take steps to reduce risks. According to the official Xinhua news agency, these include:
Checking schools, police stations, and factories for hidden dangers.
Settling disputes related to family, marriage, inheritance, housing, and wages in a timely manner.
Strengthening the prevention and control of risks at the source.
More conflict resolution mandates have been passed on to the Ministry of Justice on matters related to inheritance, land conflicts, and wages owed.
Concerns Over Reach and Public Backlash
While these efforts are meant to try to prevent a repeat of these tragedies, experts caution on possible overreach by the government. Lynette Ong, a professor at the University of Toronto, warns, "If you nip the conflict in its bud, you'd imagine the system then would impose a lot of pressure. on schools, enterprises and factories."
This begs the question of whether such interventions would become too intrusive, thus provoking a backlash from the public in the long term. The balance between security and freedom remains at the forefront of the debate.
The Wider Ramifications
A spate of mass killings in China speaks both to stresses in society and to the difficulties of governance in a society rapidly changing. The Chinese government tries to implement more rigorous measures in an effort not to draw increasing scrutiny both at home and abroad.
