Fast-Moving Wildfire in California: Homes Destroyed, Evacuations Ordered
A raging wildfire broke out in Malibu, California, overnight, forcing thousands to flee and leaving a trail of destruction behind it. Dubbed the Franklin Fire, the wildfire has torched over 2,700 acres since it began late Monday night in Malibu Canyon. Significant damage was reported to homes and infrastructure, though fortunately, no serious injuries have been reported.
Immediate Threat to Malibu Residents
The fire started at about 10:50 PM local time on Monday, amidst a red-flag warning, a forecast of weather events that may result in extreme wildfire risk to people and property. The Franklin Fire has burned down several homes, with only charred debris and brick chimneys remaining from some of them. Over 5,000 residents have been forced to flee their homes as blackouts were implemented to reduce the chance of the fire spreading.
Malibu, a city known for its wealthy residents and properties overlooking the luxurious coastline, has seen its fair share of wildfires. Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga are some of the celebrities reportedly owning homes in the evacuation zones.
Efforts to Contain the Blaze
As of now, it is 0% contained. Local firefighters, assisted by air crews, have been attempting to get the fire under control since it started. Images shared by news agencies show the gruesome aftermath: burned-out cars, razed homes, and thick smoke covering it all.
Amidst the destruction, some residents have taken matters into their own hands. Alec Gellis, a Malibu local, used gas-powered water pumps connected to his pool to save his property and neighboring homes. "We turned it into a tropical rainforest," he told local media, commending firefighters for their rapid response.
Schools and Services Affected
Several schools in Malibu have cancelled classes until further notice. The city issued a statement of support to affected residents:
"Our hearts and thoughts go out to all those impacted. We will do everything possible to support their recovery."
History of Wildfires in Malibu
Not the first of its kind in Malibu, a very disastrous wildfire raged in 2018: the Woolsey Fire destroyed over 85,000 acres, took lives, and left hundreds of homes leveled to ashes-including those owned by famous names like Gerard Butler and Miley Cyrus.
Wildfires are common in California because of its dry climate, but experts warn that climate change is making these disasters even worse. Warmer temperatures, longer droughts, and stronger winds all combine to create the worst conditions for wildfires to spread rapidly.
Moving Forward
While the cause of the Franklin Fire remains under investigation, one thing for sure is its impact on the Malibu community. For now, residents await word while being urged by officials to put safety first and adhere to all evacuation orders.
