Insights from ATIS-2024:
In his impassionate call for technological self-reliance, Sandeep K. Shukla of IIT Kanpur asked India to set up its own threat-hunting mechanisms. Speaking at the 14th International Conference on Applications and Techniques in Information Security (ATIS-2024), held at Sastra Deemed University in Thanjavur, Shukla spoke about the homegrown approach to cybersecurity over and above any foreign malware research communities.
Why India Needs Independent Threat-Hunting Mechanisms
Shukla explained that through the development of indigenous mechanisms, India can effectively accomplish the following:
- Analyze and Detect APTs: Local solutions would be more amenable to the peculiar challenges Indian industries and institutions are facing.
- Mitigate Threat Bias: This could be due to external sources' intelligence feeding in a biased or inconsistent threat attribution process, which often leads to less effective responses.
- Ensure Objectivity: An in-house system can offer better threat analysis with no subjective element introduced through external feeds.
"India's independent threat detection move will also give the country renewed strength for targeted attacks that have, so far, proved to be more challenging to handle," Shukla said.
ATIS-2024: Platform for Cybersecurity Innovation
This two-day symposium, jointly organized by Sastra Deemed University and Deakin University, Australia, provided a platform for exploring cutting-edge research in digital security and forensics. Experts from all over the world attended and presented on various pressing issues and advancements in this field.
Key Speakers:
- Gang Li from Deakin University talked about international trends in digital security.
- V.S. Shankar Sriram, Dean of the School of Computing at Sastra Deemed University, whose presentation emphasized that academia-industry collaboration will be key in deciding on cybersecurity matters.
The Way Ahead
As India strides ahead to create state-of-the-art digital infrastructure, it needs strong, autonomous cybersecurity policies more than ever. Events like ATIS-2024 mark the importance of collaboration and innovation towards that goal.
