So, the US presidential race is getting pretty hot, and everyone's throwing shade at China. But, hold your horses! Li Cheng, a big shot in understanding the deal between the US and China, reckons a full-on bust-up between the two isn't likely, even if Harris or Trump wins.

What They Say vs. What They'll Do

Li Cheng, who started the University of Hong Kong's deal on modern-day China and the rest of the world, says that during the race to be president, people often talk big about China. But, once they're in the hot seat, things usually don't get as crazy as they sound.

"You know, even though everyone in America seems really upset with China right now, actually fighting a war with them isn't going to make everyone in the US hold hands and sing 'Kumbaya'," Li points out. So, all that tough talk might just be for show.

The Gap Between Promises and Actions

Li, who used to run the show at the Brookings Institution's place for all things China, says that we've got to remember that what politicians say in public isn't always what they're thinking in private. "These guys might talk tough on China, but when it comes to actually doing something, they're not always that hardcore," he says. That's something to keep in mind when we're trying to figure out what's going to happen between the US and China after the election.

How China Sees It

And, from the other side of the coin, Li suggests that the Chinese government doesn't get too wound up about what's said during the election. "They know that what candidates promise and what actually happens are two different things," he says. The Chinese are playing it cool, waiting to see what happens after the dust settles.
