Oh man, it's so sad to share this news. A 25-year-old firefighter from Oakland, Caeden Laffan, drowned while swimming early on Thursday morning at the Pacific Pier, which is just south of La Jolla. The poor guy was only here for the California Firefighter Games, you know, that big event where firefighters from all over the state come to play sports and have a good time together.
Apparently, he was out with some friends and family around 2 in the morning, just chilling in the water, when something went wrong. He went in up to his waist, but then just disappeared. The local fire and rescue folks went all out looking for him, using boats, guys on the ground, and even a Coast Guard helicopter. They sadly found his body washed up on the beach a bit later.
The San Diego Fire Chief, Colin Stowell, is totally devastated. He talked about how they found him and said they'd honor him like he was one of their own. They even draped him in an American flag when they took him to the medical examiner. That's some serious respect.
Back in Oakland, Fire Chief Damon Covington said everyone's really feeling the loss. Laffan was like a shining star in their department, full of energy and promise. His family and friends are getting so much love and support from everyone who knew him.
The whole firefighting community is just really down about this. It's like a bad dream that's hit everyone hard, especially during the games. It just goes to show that you've gotta be super careful, even when you're just having fun in the water. Stay safe out there, folks.
