Fire at South Korean Battery Plant Kills 22, Most Victims Migrant Workers

A terrible fire broke out at a lithium battery factory near Seoul on Monday, claiming the lives of 22 workers, most of whom were migrant laborers from China. This is one of the deadliest industrial accidents in South Korea in recent years.

The fire started at the Aricell-owned factory in Hwaseong, about 28 miles south of the capital. Out of the 102 people working there at the time, 22 died - 18 Chinese workers, one Laotian, and two South Koreans. One more person is still missing and it's not clear if they were inside the building when the fire started. Two workers suffered serious injuries and were taken to the hospital, while six others had minor injuries.

The fire started when a single battery cell caught fire, causing a series of explosions among the 35,000 lithium battery cells stored on the factory's second floor. Lithium batteries can be dangerous because they can short circuit and catch fire really easily.

The firefighters and rescue teams had a hard time putting out the fire because it was so intense, there was a lot of toxic smoke, and there was a risk of more explosions. The building was badly damaged, with the roof caved in. TV footage showed flames and smoke pouring out of the factory.

Aricell makes batteries that power electricity and utility networks. Because lithium batteries are really good at storing energy, they're used more and more. But they can be dangerous because they can catch fire and explode.

The president of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, said he wanted all the resources needed to deal with this situation and called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire. This is the deadliest fire since one at a construction site in 2020 that killed 38 people.

This accident reminds us that industrial accidents are still a problem in South Korea, even though the country is known for its advanced technology and manufacturing.
