Hell broke loose at a Mexican election rally yesterday when a strong gust of wind blew a huge stage down on the crowd below.

Local officials say that at least 9 people were killed and 54 others were injured in the horrific accident at a rally held in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León. The stage, set up for speeches by presidential candidates, buckled under the sudden wind and collapsed onto the folks gathered below.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, treating the injured and searching for anyone still trapped or hurt. It was a heart-wrenching sight, with twisted metal and shocked attendees needing help from the first responders.

Reports say that presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez was briefly taken to the hospital after getting caught in the collapse, but he's now out and about with just minor injuries. The rest of the candidates have put their campaigns on hold for now.

"This is a terrible day for Mexico," President Enrique Peña Nieto said in a TV address, looking visibly shaken. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and everyone who's hurt in this terrible accident."

The authorities have started an investigation into what caused the stage to collapse, looking closely at whether it was built strong enough to handle strong winds. This tragedy is sure to cast a shadow over the rest of the Mexican presidential election season.
