Delhi Hospital Fire Tragedy: Owner's Checkered Past Comes to Light

It's just heartbreaking. A fire at a hospital in Delhi's Vivek Vihar on Saturday night took the lives of six newborn babies. The infants, aged between one and twenty days old, were helpless victims of an accident that authorities believe started with an exploding oxygen cylinder. The tragedy has left families devastated and the community in shock.

As investigations continue, disturbing revelations about the hospital's owner, Dr. Naveen Khichi, have emerged. It turns out that Dr. Khichi has been running several children's facilities across Delhi, and has faced quite a few run-ins with the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) over the years for flouting regulations. This raises some serious questions about how such a facility with a documented history of non-compliance was allowed to keep operating.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Saturday morning, was contained to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the hospital. The blast from the exploding cylinder is said to have caused widespread damage, leading to the deaths of six innocent babies. The families of the victims are understandably in a state of deep mourning, and their pain is impossible to imagine.

On Monday, a city court granted the Delhi Police's request for a three-day custodial interrogation of Dr. Khichi and an on-duty doctor at the time of the fire, Dr. Aaksh. This move by the court reflects the gravity of the situation and the need for a thorough investigation into the causes of the fire and any possible negligence on the part of the hospital staff.

The reports from Hindustan Times also detail some previous instances where Dr. Khichi had run-ins with the DGHS. Back in 2018, the health regulator took legal action against him for illegally operating a pediatric hospital in Vivek Vihar Block B, which was just meters away from the facility that met its tragic end on Saturday.

These revelations serve as a wake-up call for stricter enforcement of healthcare regulations and improved oversight mechanisms. The loss of these innocent lives is a stark reminder of the consequences of laxity and underlines the importance of prioritizing patient safety above all else. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims, and we hope that justice will be served in this terrible tragedy.
