China Does Some "Taiwan Tantrums" After New Leader Takes Office

So, China's been throwing a bit of a fit lately. They launched these big military drills around Taiwan on Thursday, May 23rd. Now, why you ask? Well, it's because Taiwan just swore in a new president, Lai Ching-te, and China doesn't like it. They see these drills as a way to give the island a little "punishment" for being, you know, its own thing.

During his inauguration speech, President Lai called for peace and democracy, but that didn't seem to sit too well with the Chinese government. They've been rattling their sabers and acting all tough, which is really just making things more awkward between the two.

These drills are pretty huge, with China's army, navy, air force, and even rocket force all getting in on the action. They're covering areas all around Taiwan, from the Taiwan Strait to the north, south, and east of the island, and even near those Taiwan-controlled islands.

Taiwan's military, being the badasses they are, have mobilized their forces and assured everyone that they've got this under control. This isn't the first time China's tried to intimidate Taiwan like this, but it never seems to work. Tensions have been pretty high for years now, with China claiming Taiwan as their own territory even though it's basically its own separate country.
